Two people had left Kauritetahi hut and couldn't find there way back. They had a GPS but didn't know how to use it. They read out there grid reference, which was only 500m from the hut. One team sent in to pick them up and take them to the hut for the night then walk out in the morning. LP's located and 3am Monday.

Tramper injured ankle/lower leg after leaving Kauritatahi Hut to head home.

Two LandSAR members were sent in to assess the injured person and locate a winch site or landing zone.

They were able to assisst the injured person to a helicoptor landing zone about 500m away.

The injured person and his mate were lifted off and the delivered to Hamilton Hospital.

The LandSAR team walked out that evening.

OPERATIONAL TRACKING

OPERATIONAL TRACKING

This course teaches participants operational tracking techniques and tactics including trailing, leap frog sign cutting and building a tracking profile.

These skills are then practiced on a 48 hour tracking exercise, which is run concurrently with the Operational Tracking Team Leader course.

All participants are provided with verbal and written feedback on their skills and potential to be part of an Operational Tracking team.

Minimum number of attendees - 12

To attend this course participants need to have completed Operational Tracking Introduction 

PROCESSING WILDERNESS CLUE SITES

THIS IS THE THIRD OF THE TRACKING COURSES FOR SAR FIELD TEAM MEMBERS.

In this 2 day course, students are expected to have knowledge and field experience of the skills taught in the 2 previous courses (TCS & TWE).

PWCS teaches the skills necessary to deduct the subject’s likely physical and mental condition and equipment carried, and to then make search decisions based on these deductions.

Emphasis is placed on identifying, analysing and processing clue sites in wilderness environments such as camp sites, fire sites, washing and water collection points.

This is fundamentally a practical course with students developing skills previously gained and extending those skills through the application of new theory and practice in the field, with the assistance of expert tutors. 

There will be one evening/night exercise and you will be required to camp out on the Saturday night.
